What is a teaser trailer?
A teaser trailer is used to advertise and promote an upcoming movie and to entice the specified audience to watch the movie at the cinema.
Genre- A psychological horror
A psychological horror is a sub-genre that is based upon the horror genre itself which relies on the character's fears, guilts, beliefs, eerie sound effects, eerie sounds and tension building up. A psychological horror differentiates from a horror because it is not based upon purely gore and violence. Neither does the psychological horror contain a monstrous villain, however an actual human being with a horrific identity not revealed normally till the film is fully in the plot or right at the end.
A psychological horror aims to work on mentally affecting the audience rather than showing violent, horrific scenes that you would find in a traditional horror. Psychological horrors aim to create discomfort in the viewers.
There are a variety of different horror films. They differentiate between themes. For example; 'psycho' represents a psychological horror. The 'Exorcist' is a religious type of horror with a religious theme. The film 'Saw' represents a gore type of thriller as it is has bloody and gruesome elements to it. 'The Decent' would be another type of gore/monstrous type of thriller.
The typical characters that you find in a horror movie is the 'original' lead character who often results as the survivor of the movie. Normally there is a sense of good vs evil with the conflict between the villain and the victim. The villain/monster has a trademark for example; the way he kills or what weapon he uses for attack. A list of the characters that you are likely to find are; monsters, zombies, murders, psychiatric patients, mentally disturbed convicts, monstrous animals. There is always a vulnerable character who seems to fall into a trap at the beginning of the movie which is an effective way of providing entertainment for the audience. There may be a character who appears 'clever' who figures out clues or how to escape the clutches of the problem.
A psychological thriller often incorporates elements from the mystery and drama genre, however also represents typical traits of a psychological thriller.
These films consist of certain theme elements that run throughout the movie. For example; 'Reality.' Characters often aim to determine what is true and what is not within the narrative. There is sometimes an element of 'death', characters either fear or have a fascination with death.

Mise-En-Scene
Settings- Horrors and thrillers can be set in the daytime, however they are more suited to nightime. The setting that is most appropriate is a dark place, and being in a abandoned area with run-down buildings. The setting creates a certain mood and ambience for the targeted audience. For example; our teaser trailer being set in the day-time and having the prank calls take place does not create as much of a scary tone as it would if it was night time. Settings for an effective teaser trailer would be; derelict houses, sorority houses, university grounds, schools, lakes and the countryside. Horror is based upon conflict and dilemmas that the character will endure.
Costume- The protagonist is usually dressed in very pale, white or brighter colours than the antagonist, showing the audience that the protagonist is innocent and creating the contrast between both characters. The make up of the protagonist is usually very minimal, to emphasize the innocence and childish appearance, like they don't understand what is happening. This makes the audience sympathize and get connected to the protagonist, creating a more anxious atmosphere.
The antagonist usually wears dark items of clothing, to symbolize danger and death. The make up of the antagonist is usually gloomy/pale, to connotate the mysteriousness and typical 'spooky' villain.
Props- Typically the villain should carry a weapon, to enhance their mental instability for example; Texas Chainsaw Massacre the antagonist carries a chainsaw, to brutally murder everyone. Props play a big part in all horror films as they help tell the story, or perhaps tell the story of a character.

Iconography
There is a standard pattern in horror films iconography because of the stereotypical view of how they should be. For instance; the connotation of the horror genre ensures that the audience is able to establish between what is good or evil or what is right and wrong. 'Haunted house' is an example of a typical horror iconography, followed by typical human behaviour as a symbol of death. For example, in 'Final Destination' the girl has 'premonitions' which symbolize that death is going to occur. Another example of horror iconography is a mask; used on the villain throughout the film a mask represents the mental instability of the antagonist. Finally, the most typical cliché is the use of an original murder weapon such as a 'knife' or 'chainsaw', just like in many other psychological horrors prime example being, Scream.
Iconography for horror films are shaped by moral panics, hegemony and chomsky. These have effected the way people view typical horror films today, and therefore the audience needs have to be met.
Moral Panics- There is a hyped view of how horror films should be portrayed, and often they portray issues that could happen in society and highlights society's fears.
Hegemony- Hegemony is the way people in power choose to maintain control. In the 1940s all horror films were banned from being shown mainstream, as those in power felt it was unwanted propaganda from Hitler due to the current political issues. Therefore, the government focussed not allowing any dominant ideologies as they had become a sensitive issue at the time. In the same way, many horror films of this period tend to give men or women the form of an animal, for example, The Wolf-Man (1941) followed the storyline based on the Nazi party and the wolf was based on Adolf Hitler.
Chomsky- Argued that mass media can be used to divert people's attention away from real issues. The 1930s horror films highlighted this, they were made to take peoples minds off the approaching world war, making it an escape from reality. Hence why people now believe horror films are not reality and are far from it, allowing them to escape current affairs. For example; The Shining (1980) is one of the most iconic psychological horrors, and is one of the most unreal plot lines.

Scream
Scream is one of the biggest influences for our teaser trailer 'Wrong Number'. We will take influences from the mis-en-scene, lighting, plot line and sound. We want our antagonist to sound unknown and mysterious, by editing our vocals just like Scream. Our plot line is different but on the same basis of a killer unknown calling and then killing teens in far out locations. Far out locations give the target audience the on edge feeling of trying to help the protagonist but they cant, making the film more appealing.

Joy Ride
Joy Ride is another example of an influence for our own teaser trailer. The narrative in 'Joy Ride' is again similar to our teaser trailer 'Wrong Number' as it is based upon a prank that goes awry. As you can see from the above screen shots, it shows how a joke that may seem humorous at the time can go life threatening wrong. This is exactly what will be revealed in our own teaser trailer as the girls will feel taht it is amusing at the time of the prank but will begin to suffer the consequences later on. The main influence of this film is the idea of continuous phone calls, which result in panic and torture.
The use of sound in 'Joy Ride' influences our own teaser trailer. Having effective music in the teaser trailer will successfully add tension. For example; in 'Joy Ride' there is a long eerie musical build up that makes the basis of the film's soundtrack. We are influenced by this sound and are planning to use it in our own teaser trailer to create a eerie and tense atmosphere full of suspense. There is a deep tone running through 'Joy Ride' too which helps indicate levels of stress and panic for the characters running from the killer. This influences our teaser trailer as our characters will also be running from the suspected villain and having deep tone as part of the sound will contribute to creating a panic and stressful atmosphere.

One Missed Call
One Missed Call is a strong influence on our idea for our teaser trailer, again because the plot of 'One Missed Call' relates to our plot due to the idea of a anonymous phonecall being recieved but on the other end is a phone call which is allowing you to answer your death. One Missed Call, is about a group of friends who each recieve a missed call along with a voicemail left for them to hear their death before it happens. This relates to our teaser trailer because the friends are going to keep recieving continous phone calls.
Another way that this film influences our teaser trailer is their use of camera angles. For example the screen shot above of 'the telephone alone lighting up' will be similarly used in ours to create a sense of worry and distress. We want to have a camera angle showing just the telephone ringing to create suspense and an eerie atmosphere.
The lighting that you can see in these screen shots influences our idea for 'Wrong number.' As you can see its quite dark and low-level which enhances the spooky-feel to the film. The lighting plays an important part when it comes to the visuals of the trailer. It is important for creating the right ambience and mood.

When A Stranger Calls
When A Stranger Calls plays a strong influence in the making of our teaser trailer 'Wrong Number.' When A Stranger Calls is based upon a teenager who is babysitting in an isolated location and begins to receive what she believes is a prank call which she presumes is her boyfriend but really is a serial killer. This relates to our teaser trailer because of the similarity of the constant harassing phone calls. It also relates to our teaser trailer as it reveals how a prank call can result in your life being taken into someone else's hands.
The character who is the babysitter in, When A Stranger Calls, is of a similar age to the girls who are featuring in our own teaser trailer. The male who is harassing the babysitter by making the threatening phone calls is a male which reflects our own male caller in our teaser trailer.
The first screen shot above shows the girl worrying because of these continuous anonymous phone calls where the male is asking the girl ''have you checked the children?''. This relates to our teaser trailer in a unique way because our villain harasses the girls individually with the same question of 'why did you do it?' The second screen shot is a major influence on our teaser trailer because we are planning to use the same camera angle and shot to show the girl's phones ringing with the anonymous caller.

Potential Target Audience
The target audience for mainstream horror is usually 15-24, mainly due to the factor of certificates. They are certified this way due to the amount of fear, anxiety and explicit content that could disturb the younger generation. Horror films are usually advertised for the more teen age group as they are easily advertised on social networking sites, teen magazine and much more. Relating to psychological horrors in such they are aimed mostly at a slightly older age, as the plot and story lines are often complicated, and therefore require more knowledge and understanding.
Audience Expectations
What the audience would expect from a typical psychological horror...
- The use of 'psychological' within the sub-genre shows that the horror experienced will be more mental rather than physical.
- Antagonist often has a mental/emotional issue causing them to behave in such manner.
- Antagonists identity not to be revealed immediately, but deep into the plot.
- The audience rely on sound and editing to gain adrenalin and engage into the film, rather than violence.
- Plays with audience minds and fears, leaving them curious even after the film has finished.

Shot Planning
Camera Angles- Emotion and action are both highly influence by camera angles, for example; a close-up is often used to understand the actors emotions and feelings, allowing the audience to attach with those emotions. When a weapon comes onto scene, to emphasize the seriousness and danger to the audience, a close-up is then used too. For example; a close-up of a hand carrying rope and a knife will automatically infer the antagonist is going to do something to the protagonist, or at least attempt to. High angled shots are used to show the protagonist in a dangerous situation, to allow the audience to experience the whole scene and to make the actor seem smaller and more vulnerable. Low angled shots can be used to pan the scene when the worst is over to show the results or after effects for example; in our teaser trailer we want to use a pan shot to see a girl has been killed by our antagonist, to leave the audience on a cliffhanger as to how she died.
- Long shot (often used as an establishing shot),
- Full shot (also figure shot, complete view, or medium long shot),
- Medium shot,
- Close-up.
Three rarer used field sizes (see bar on the right) are:
- Extreme long shot (used for epic views and panoramas),
- American shot (also 3/4 shot), a slight variation of the medium shot
- "Italian shot" or Extreme Close Up, where only a person's eyes are visible
By camera placement "Shots" referring to camera placement and angle rather than field size include:
- Camera angles:
- the aerial shot,
- the bird's eye shot (sometimes performed as a crane shot),
- the low-angle shot,
- Over the shoulder shot,
- Point of view shot,
- Reverse shot is defined as a 180-degree camera turn to the preceding image, common in point of view and over the shoulder (in the latter, care must be applied to avoid a continuity error by violating the 180 degree rule),
- Two shot where two people are in the picture.
Lighting- The lighting always starts off bright before the plot fully begins, as the protagonist/s enter their surrounding light is bright creating a happier, more heavenly atmosphere. If there is going to be a murder or the antagonist comes onto scene the mood changes as the lighting goes dim or dull to connotate danger. This then indicates to the audience and makes them on the edge of their seats. The lighting around the antagonist is also used to make them to be a sillohette.
Sound Planning
Sound- Both digetic and non-digetic sounds are used in psychological horrors, as the films rely on the sound to create a contrast of fear. Non-digetic sound can be played to play with audiences mind and build up the tension to suggest something is about to happen for example, eerie sound effects. Fast tempo and rhythm can be interpreted as fear, chaos or anxiety. Digetic sounds are used as conversation build up and setting the scene, to create curiosity for example; in our teaser we would like to use a conversation between the antagonist and protagonist as the opening, to allow the audience to experience and connect with what the protagonist is feeling.
Speech- In horror films, the manipulation of voices (often the voice of the antagonist) is quite common. A very typical method of creating a scary voice is to alter its pitch to make it sound darker. A wide range of effects can also be added to make it sound demonic or alien. In Twin Peaks (the American television series), quite a neat trick is pulled to mystify the spirits inhabiting The Black Lodge. Their speech has been recorded backwards and then reversed to create a very strange and somewhat scary vocal effect.

Locations
Isleworth River-

This location will be used as the killing scene in our teaser. Here we only hear our antagonist killing we do not see. Eventually, the scene is revealed and our protagonist is lying dead on the floor dead. We chose this particular area as it is a clear, empty scenery. This would give the impression to the viewers that it could be a dumping area where the killer plans to leave the victim or future victims. The ambiguity of the location leaves the audience wanting more.

Research into different magazines
Before beginning our ancillary text of a magazine as one part, the research into this had to be conducted. This was done to gain influences and gather ideas into how our piece would be displayed. We did not research typical horror magazines as we wanted to attract and reach out to all audiences. The following shown below were the main influences to our piece:
Harry Potter
The Harry Potter magazine cover was one of the main influences on the Wrong Number cover. This was mainly because of the outstanding dark image, and the layout inspiration arouse from this. The big stand out text to the left of the image influenced our magazine to contain something big and bold about an exclusive interview. Although this is not a horror magazine, it became a huge help and huge inspiration.
Terminator Slavation
The Terminator Salvation magazine was a huge influence on our magazine for 'Wrong Number', this was because of the big bold text and the stand out image. But the main influence which came from this magazine was bottom row of images, this shows images from each of the Terminator movies, with our magazine we included something similar but with images of the main villians from the movies which had a influence on our teaser trailer.
Research into different posters
A Nightmare On Elm Street
Nightmare on elm street has had a huge impact on our final poster. The main idea of this poster that we liked was the silhouette image of the male character behind the girl. We thought this was a very effective way of creating a dark and eerily feel to the poster. Also the lighting which was used in this poster, emphasis the male character more, we wanted this to be achieved in our poster too, thats why we decided to go with the silhouetted image of the male character in our poster.
The Last Exorcism
We used The Last Exorcism as a influence to our final poster as most horror poster, the main character is in the center of the poster. We thought it would be a good idea to follow the same idea of having the main character in the center of the poster. The way the main character is portrayed in this poster, she stands out a lot, and the main focus is on her. We achieved this on our poster by making the main focus on the antagonist.
Three drafts of our poster
As we managed to finish our poster before our deadline, we decided to fiddle around with it and we came up with three productions. These were the three drafts we managed to achieve but we managed to pick one of the three.
